3301-35-01 Purpose and definitions.
“‘Extended learning opportunities’ means a variety of initiatives that ensure students have access to a diverse array of content-rich, high-quality opportunities that expand the time they are actively engaged in learning. These opportunities provide students with structured opportunities for academic support and enrichment, extra-curricular activities, service-learning; mentoring, recreation, character education, and other developmental activities.” (Source)
Reported Animal Abuse Cases
WFMJ.com reported that authorities had been investigating a group of children suspected of violently attacking a 6-year-old dog named Nico, apparently stabbing him multiple times in addition to striking him with objects. The alleged attackers were reportedly ages 5, 7, and 12.
DaytonDailyNews.com reported that a juvenile had apparently admitted to stabbing a deceased dog, who had ostensibly recently been hit by a car, three times—purportedly in response to a dare—before allegedly throwing the animal’s mutilated body into a dumpster.
Dayton247now.com reported on a social media video that showed a teenager allegedly throwing a family’s cat off a bridge into a creek bed and laughing. Reportedly, the juvenile in the video was identified and will be charged with knowingly committing cruelty to animals.
LimaOhio.com reported that a teenager horrifically beat, threw, and kicked a calf while someone recording the footage laughed.
CrawfordCountyNow.com reported that a group of teenagers allegedly decapitated a dog one of them had hit earlier with a car. They then reportedly filmed themselves placing the dog’s head on a guardrail.

FOX19.com reported that a juvenile had been caught on surveillance video throwing rocks at a small dog after the animal had apparently gotten away from him and then “helicopter twirling” the dog by his leash before slamming him to the ground.
WCPO.com reported that a 17-year-old from Hamilton allegedly abandoned two puppies, one of whom was subsequently hit by a train. As a result, that puppy lost his back legs and an eye. The teen has been charged with cruelty to animals and abandoning animals.
ToledoBlade.com reported that two teens allegedly abused a cat by striking him with a baseball bat and kicking him, leaving him badly injured. The boys, ages 14 and 16, reportedly face felony cruelty-to-animals charges.
FOX19NOW.com reported that children younger than 10 years old may have abused a cat and stuffed her inside a hole in a tree. She sustained three fractures to her pelvis, and her tail was severed.
ToledoBlade.com reported that a group of five or six children who looked to be about 10 to 12 years old had been seen kicking a 3-month-old miniature pinscher mix in an alley. A witness said that she saw them punting the dog in the air. The puppy died of her injuries, and the search continued for the suspects.
MorningJournalNews.com reported that a Columbiana County teenager had been accused of beating a turkey to death while a second teenager reportedly cheered him on and recorded the attack on video, which was later shared on social media.
Cleveland19.com reported that a 17-year-old boy was facing multiple charges, including bestiality and “animal cruelty,” after he admitted to sexually assaulting his family’s dachshund named PeeWee on multiple occasions. Reportedly, the teen could face additional charges depending on the results of a veterinarian’s examination of the dog.
WFMYNews2.com reported that a teenager had been charged with a fifth-degree cruelty-to-animals felony for shooting a cat to death. The cat was someone’s animal companion. The teen was initially arrested for illegally discharging a firearm, but as the case was investigated, the suspect reportedly confessed to multiple incidents.
FOX8.com reported that three teenagers had been seen taking turns kicking and beating a dog with bricks and sticks after he had been hit by a car. The dog, Indiana Bones, was receiving treatment for his injuries and required surgery. The search for the suspects was ongoing.
ABC6OnYourSide.com reported that a group of 15-year-old high school students had allegedly purchased six chicks from a local supply store and then snapped their necks and disposed of them after realizing that they couldn’t keep the animals. Reportedly, the case was under investigation and the suspects could possibly face charges.
WKBN.com reported that a 16-year-old boy had been charged with four counts of cruelty to animals after he allegedly admitted that he had sex with a small dog. According to reports, the juvenile—who has had other trouble with the law—was in the custody of child services.
WLWT.com reported that a group of juveniles had allegedly kicked and beaten a small stray dog. The dog was said to show signs of traumatic brain injury but was expected to recover.
